The structures can be divided into two types of installation: Radio Frequency or Acoustic Magnetic.
Radio Frequency (RF) Technology
It is based on a very thin, spiral-shaped LC oscillating circuit used to radiate into space the high-frequency electromagnetic waves necessary for the system to function.
Different radio frequencies can be configured, however, the one typically used and most widely used is at 8.2 MHz.
The circuit, which acts as a transmitter and receiver of the waves, is very simple and at the same time inexpensive.
Systems placed near the openings, for example, of the store (antennas or anti-shoplifting barriers) work in pairs, both as source and destination of the signal, so the process is as follows:
- The transmitting antenna emits a constant radio signal in the immediate vicinity
- The signal is intercepted by a tag or an anti-shoplifting plate (or TAG) that is close enough
- If the label or tag plate has not been properly disconnected using the appropriate equipment at the checkouts (a defavitter or detacher, respectively), it will reissue an additional signal
- The signal is picked up by the receiving antenna: when it happens, the alarm goes off.
Acoustic Magnetic Technology
This type of system uses a label, containing thin metal flakes, that generates a pulsed magnetic field.
When a magnetic material enters inside a magnetic field, the field changes its size slightly due to a shift in the distribution of electrons in the material.
When this occurs, the label emits a signal that is picked up by the system.
This phenomenon is called magnetostriction and its adjective is magneto-acoustic; “acoustic” because in a pulsed magnetic field the label begins to vibrate, rhythmically changing its dimensions, expanding and compressing at a particular frequency, causing a characteristic signal.
